Handmade and made-to-order ideas that sell online, how to price your time, and how to start with five products and one store link.
Handmade products sell well online when they are useful, look good in a photo and can be made the same way every time. Good places to start are beaded jewellery, custom home décor, personalised gifts, Ankara accessories, candles and skincare made in small batches, and made-to-order stationery for weddings and events.
You don’t need a big workshop to begin. You need a product you can make well, clear photos, a fair price that pays for your time, and one store link you can share on WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok.
What makes a handmade product sell online?
The best sellers share a few traits: they solve a problem, suit a clear group of buyers, or can be personalised. Buyers pay more for something that feels made for them than for something they can find in any market.
- Personalised home décor and name art
- Handmade jewellery and statement pieces
- Custom items for weddings, birthdays and owambes
- Gift boxes and hampers you put together yourself
- Small-batch skincare, candles and soaps
- Ankara bags, headwraps and accessories
Which handmade products are good for beginners?
1. Beaded jewellery. Necklaces, bracelets and waist beads are light to deliver and easy to show in photos. Pick one style, such as bold statement pieces or simple everyday beads, so your page looks like a real brand.
2. Custom home décor. Name signs, framed prints and wall art made to order sell well as gifts. Show one finished example and let buyers choose the name, colour or size.
3. Event stationery. Invitations, thank-you cards and labels for weddings and parties have clear deadlines, so buyers order early and pay a fair price.
4. Small-batch skincare and candles. These sell again and again when customers like them. Label every batch clearly and keep the recipe the same.
What about made-to-order and printed products?
If you don’t want to hold much stock, sell made-to-order items: printed T-shirts, tote bags, mugs or phone cases with your own designs. You make or print each one after the customer pays, so you only buy materials for real orders. Tell buyers clearly how long making and delivery take.
How do you price handmade products?
Add up materials, packaging and your time, then add your profit. If a necklace uses ₦2,500 of beads and packaging and takes you an hour, and you value your hour at ₦2,000, your cost is ₦4,500. With a 40% margin, your price is about ₦4,500 ÷ 0.6, which is ₦7,500. Many makers forget to pay themselves for their time.
How do you get your first handmade sales?
- Make five to ten products you are proud of.
- Photograph them in daylight on a plain background.
- Put them in one store with prices, sizes and delivery details.
- Share the link on your WhatsApp Status, Instagram and TikTok.
- Ask your first buyers for a photo of the product in use, and share it with their permission.
