A five-part formula for product descriptions that answer buyers' questions, with real-feeling before and after rewrites for fashion, food, beauty and gadgets.
If you want to know how to write product descriptions that sell, start here: answer the buyer’s questions before they ask them. A good description says what the product is, who it is for, what it does for them, the key details (size, material, colour, quantity), the price and delivery, and what to do next. Write it in short lines that are easy to read on a phone.
That is the whole secret. Most descriptions fail because they say too little (“Available. DM.”) or too much in one long block. This guide gives you a simple formula and shows it working with Nigerian before and after examples for fashion, food, beauty, gadgets and home items.
Why do product descriptions matter so much?
A buyer scrolling on Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp or your store cannot touch the product. Your photos show what it looks like. Your description has to do everything else: answer questions, build trust and make the decision easy.
A good description helps you:
- Get fewer repeat questions like “what size?”, “is it original?” or “do you deliver to Port Harcourt?”
- Sell to the right people, because buyers know exactly what they are getting
- Reduce returns and complaints from wrong expectations
- Show up in search, on Google and inside your store, because you use the words buyers type
Many sellers find that fixing their descriptions is one of the cheapest ways to improve sales, because it costs nothing but a bit of time.
What is the formula for descriptions that sell?
Use this structure for almost any product. Keep each part to one or two short lines.
Features vs benefits
A feature is a fact about the product. A benefit is what that fact means for the buyer.
- Feature: “20,000mAh power bank.” Benefit: “Charge your phone up to four times during a long power cut.”
- Feature: “100% cotton.” Benefit: “Stays cool in Lagos heat.”
- Feature: “Airtight lid.” Benefit: “Keeps your chin chin crunchy for weeks.”
You need both. Lead with the benefit, then back it up with the feature.
Use the words your buyers use
Buyers search with simple, everyday words. A Lagos buyer looking for a dress might type “ankara gown” or “owambe dress”, not “printed cotton occasion garment”. Look at the questions in your DMs and comments, and borrow the exact words people use.
A few quick ways to find buyer language:
- Read your last 20 customer chats and note the words they use for your product
- Check how buyers describe similar items in comments on Instagram and TikTok
- Type your product into Google and look at the suggested searches
- Ask a friend who is not in your business to describe the product in one line
Swap vague words for specific ones
Some words appear in almost every description, so they do not help you stand out. Replace them with details:
- “Quality” becomes “double-stitched seams” or “thick, soft cotton”
- “Affordable” becomes the actual price, like ₦8,500
- “Big” becomes “fits a 15-inch laptop” or “serves 10 people”
- “Fast delivery” becomes “Lagos delivery within 24 hours”
- “Original” becomes “sourced from the brand’s official distributor”, if that is true
Specific details are easier to believe than general praise.
Before and after: fashion
Before:
Beautiful dress. Available in sizes. DM for price.
This tells the buyer almost nothing. They have to message you to find out the price, the sizes and the fabric. Many will not bother.
After:
Adire midi wrap dress
For work, church and weekend outings.
Soft cotton adire that breathes in the heat and does not crease easily. Wrap tie waist adjusts to your shape.
Sizes 8 to 18. See the size guide in the last photo.
Colours: indigo, rust.
₦21,000. Lagos delivery in 24 hours. Other states 2 to 4 days.
What changed: a clear name, the occasion, a benefit (breathes, does not crease), the sizes, colours, price and delivery. A buyer can decide without sending a single message.

Before and after: food
Before:
Chin chin for sale. Very sweet. Order now.
After:
Crunchy milk chin chin, 1kg tub
The perfect snack for school lunchboxes, office desks and parties.
Made fresh in small batches with milk, butter and a hint of nutmeg. Not too sweet, never oily.
Sealed airtight tub. Best within 4 weeks of opening.
₦6,500. Same-day delivery in Ikeja and Yaba if you order by 2pm.
What changed: the size, who it is for, ingredients that build trust, storage information and a clear delivery cut-off. Food buyers care about freshness and hygiene, so say it.
Before and after: beauty
Before:
Original serum. Works fast. 100% guaranteed.
Words like “works fast” and “100% guaranteed” sound like every other page and can make careful buyers suspicious.
After:
Niacinamide face serum, 30ml
For oily skin and dark marks.
A light serum that helps control shine and evens out skin tone with daily use. Absorbs quickly with no sticky feel.
How to use: 2 to 3 drops after cleansing, morning and night. Follow with sunscreen in the day.
Sealed bottle from the brand’s official distributor.
₦9,500. Nationwide delivery.
What changed: who it is for, an honest benefit, how to use it and where it comes from. Notice there is no promise of a “cure” or overnight results.
Before and after: gadgets
Before:
Earpiece. Good sound. Cheap price.
After:
Wireless earbuds with charging case
For calls, music and long bus rides.
Clear sound for calls even in a noisy danfo. Up to several hours of listening per charge, with extra charges from the case.
Bluetooth connection. Works with Android and iPhone.
In the box: earbuds, charging case, USB-C cable.
Tested before dispatch. ₦14,000. Delivery in Lagos within 24 hours.
What changed: compatibility, what is in the box, a real use case and a trust signal (“tested before dispatch”). Gadget buyers worry about fakes and compatibility, so answer those worries directly. Only include battery times that the maker states.
Before and after: home items
Before:
Throw pillows. Different colours. Nice.
After:
Velvet throw pillow covers, set of 2
Give your living room a fresh look without buying a new chair.
Soft velvet with hidden zip. Fits standard 45cm x 45cm inserts (not included).
Colours: emerald, mustard, navy.
Machine wash on cold.
₦12,000 per set. Delivery fee shown at checkout.
What changed: it says it is a set of two, what size inserts it fits, that inserts are not included, and how to wash. These are the exact things that cause complaints when they are missing.
How do you write descriptions for each channel?
Your full description lives on your product page. On social media, you will often shorten it.
Online store
Use the full five-part formula. This is where buyers come to check details before paying. A Shopinbos store gives each product its own page with photos, options and checkout, so your full description has a home.
Instagram and Facebook captions
Use a hook line, two or three key details, price and how to order. Put the link in bio or in Stories.
TikTok
Say the main benefit in the video, put the price on screen and keep the caption short: product name, price, “link in bio”.
WhatsApp catalogue and Status
Keep it short: name, two key details, price and delivery. Long descriptions get cut off in previews.
Save time writing descriptions
Writing a good description for every product takes time, especially if you have 50 or more items. A few ways to speed up:
- Use a template. Copy the five-part formula into your notes and fill it in for each product.
- Batch your writing. Write descriptions for ten products in one sitting.
- Reuse for similar items. Change only the colour, size or variant details.
- Use AI as a first draft. Peggy, the Shopinbos AI assistant, can draft posts for you, and you can edit them so they sound like you. Always check the facts before you publish.
You can also find writing guides and free tools on the Shopinbos academy.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- “DM for price.” Hidden prices push buyers away.
- Copying the supplier’s description. Many sellers use the same text, so you blend in. Rewrite it in your own words.
- One giant paragraph. Break it into short lines.
- Too many emojis. One or two help. Ten make it hard to read.
- Wrong or missing sizes. This leads to returns and bad reviews.
- Forgetting delivery information. Buyers in other states want to know if you deliver to them.
